First of all, I apologise for the lateness of this blog post. Had other things to deal with and completely forgot about this so for that, I'm sorry. Now going into the topic of this blog post, this year has once again seen some of the best that the film industry have to offer. While there have been many prequels, sequels and adaptations, there are always some original ideas as well. Now like with my 'Top 10 Games of the Year', this will also have the same rules which are films that have been released this year and have seen either on the big screen or on Blu-Ray and also have reviewed (not neccesarly all of them but you get the idea). My honourable mentions:
Captain America: The First Avenger - Haven't seen it
Paranormal Activity 3 - Haven't seen it
Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 - Haven't seen it and have no intention of doing so
Happy Feet Two - Haven't seen it
Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwreacked - Haven't seen it
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never - Haven't seen it and have no intention of doing so
Cars 2 - Although I have seen it, I feel its not the best Pixar film I've seen so far
Rio - Too childish for me even though I've seen it
Your Highness - A bit too sexual and cleverly dirty for me (and yes, I have seen it)
Sucker Punch - Bad storyline and overly used CGI elements (seen it)
Abduction - Very boring and predictable (seen it)
Gnomeo and Juliet - Nothing too new or interesting (seen it)
The Smurfs - Haven't seen it and have no intention of doing so
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - It would've been there if it was a top 11 but oh well
Johnny English Reborn - Haven't seen it
Cowboys and Aliens - Haven't seen it
And a number of others. Now on with my list:
10. The Hangover: Part 2
When I watched this, originally I thought the storyline was very similar to the original but now looking back at it, its actually more funnier than the last one. The boys go to Thailand for Stu's wedding and as you probably guess, the stag do doesn't go according to plan and the boys end up in Bangkok where they must once again, tie up all loose ends and find the missing guy. Great film if you loved the first one.
9. The Inbetweeners Movie
Now while a lot of you will wonder why I put this at 9. Its because although its a good film, I've never seen and possibly won't ever see the TV series of it for reasons that I feel no need of telling. The boys travel to Crete to try and get laid and to prove their Independence to their parents but not everything goes well in it. Great film if you enjoyed the TV show and also good for anyone into Adult Humour.
8. Kung Fu Panda 2
A film with Jack Black in it, is bound to be funny. I saw the first one and enjoyed watching this one as well despite being a bit rushed at times but anyway. Po discovers that the murderer of his parents is at large in a city called Gongmen. Desperate to avenge his parents (and to also save Kung Fu) Po and the Dragon Warriors travel to Gongmen to bring back order and peace and to defeat the murderer of Po's parents. As always with every Jack Black film, very funny and enjoyable and definitely worth seeing if you enjoyed the last film.
7. The Green Hornet
In my opinion, this is pretty much another film where regular people become heroes and aren't so good at it (much like Kick Ass). But despite that, The Green Hornet definitely delivers. A guy's father dies and the guy teams up with a gadget sort of guy and become heroes. They do well for most of the film but then it goes down hill towards the end. Great super hero film.
6. X-Men: First Class
Although this would've been better in 3D (not released in 3D which kinda sucks), X-Men: First Class is a great film that sees the origins of Professor X and Magneto and the journey they have together to create the X-Men and The Brotherhood which ultimately leads them to possibly starting WW3. For any X-Men fan, this is a must see.
5. Green Lantern
So far in the current generation of mankind, Batman and Superman have been rebooted into the most up-to-date live action films Superman Returns, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight with new actors portraying them. In Green Lantern we see Hal Jordon and his journey to becoming one of the most legendary Green Lanterns out there that we all know and love. Anyone who loves DC comics must definitely check this out.
4. Thor
While Thor maybe not one of the best and well known of the Marvel heroes out there, this film pretty much sees how he became an Avenger after trying to prove himself worthy of ruling all of Asgard by being exiled to Earth and trying to defeat his brother Loki from taking over. Great film if anyone who likes super hero films.
3. Transformers: Dark of The Moon
Considering that I didn't see the last two films until after I watched this one (in 3D as well), this film, pretty much, sees how two alien races can cause war against each other on a planet that they are not used to at all. This film feels like the apocalypse has come and could do what the film showed to us at some point in the future. Great film, but would've done some more work on the story.
2. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Its good to know that Disney still like to bring back their most popular franchises to the big screen and POTC is no exception. In the latest instalment, Caption Jack Sparrow travels with Blackbeard and his daughter, Angelica, to the Fountain of Youth where Blackbeard can have eternal life. But Barbossa has a grudge on Blackbeard and is prepared to take him down whatever the cost. The funniest of the 4 films and definitely the best by far. Worth seeing if you're into these kinds of films.
1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
This year saw the end of what has been a great decade of Harry Potter. Based on the books by JK Rowling, the Harry Potter films have made a big impression on the world, so much so, that most people in the world would consider Harry Potter as one of the best British franchises out there. Continuing from Part 1, Harry, Ron and Harmonie are still after Horcruxes, but with Voldemort now getting stronger and fast approaching Hogwarts, They must hurry if they want to kill him and defend Hogwarts from the biggest threat in the Wizarding world's history. Best film of the year, in my opinion and a must see for all Harry Potter fans old and new but please see the other films first before watching this one.
And that's my top 10 films of the year. Thank you for reading.
