Random West End Show Review - American Idiot

You know for a name like that, chances are that if you're a Green Day fan, you'll know what this is. So American Idiot follows a long line of shows which use a set number of songs from a particular band, artist or group to form into a story, using the most well known song of that band, artist or group as the name of the story. Mamma Mia did it, Thriller did it and even We Will Rock you did it. Now its Green Day's turn and I have to say, of all the shows that use this formula, this was great. Let's rock out shall we:

So as best as I can describe, the story focuses on 3 lads who all go on their separate journeys in life. One is about to become a dad, one joins the army after being sick of the city life and the third one travels to find the woman of her dreams. All while we hear the sweet sound of Green Day.

So the show started out, showing us news footage of 9/11 which many fans believe was when they became mainstream. I'm not sure myself, but it did strike to me that this would be a serious show. However it wasn't as serious as I thought as the majority of it, is a showcase of Green Day songs. So its more singing than dialouge. Now if this was say a play using songs of Justin Beiber just as an example, I would literally leave the theatre in disgust. But as this was Green Day (who as of recently, became an all time favourite band of mine), I stayed and thought it was a great, uninterruped showcase of their best music with a story to go with them and the likes of Amelia Lily (X Factor runner up), Aaron Sidwell (EastEnders) and Steve Rushton (known for his music in various Disney film soundtracks) having the talent to sing them all and act. Its a great show for such a small theatre and any fan of Green Day will enjoy it. Guaranteed. 9/10
